Artist’s Statement

CALIFORNIA, TODAY; NEW YORK, YESTERDAY.

My paintings are about what I see in my daily life. After thirteen years in New York City, I recently returned to my home state, California, happy to be seeing the golden, rolling hills.

My paintings are also about what I used to see daily from the sidewalks of New York. Although the Pacific coast is my home, New York has a beauty I will never forget. Painting NYC from California has been my recent luxury.

My practice has been to paint one California landscape painting and then paint one New York cityscape. Alternating so what I learn on one may be applied to the other. My intent with either subject is the same, to communicate the feeling of the views, to express my fondness with relaxed, gestural strokes, and the colors of reflected light.

I’ve painted all my life, I love the paint as much as the subjects, I love paintings as much as my perception. I’ve spent decades studying paintings in museums and galleries. I think I’m painting in conversation with the late 19th Century Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, especially Pizarro, Monet, Van Gogh, and Cézanne.
